HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The attorney for a young man accused of killing one of his passengers and injuring another while driving drunk on the H1 Freeway last year says it was a tragic accident and not what city prosecutors are making it out to be.

Kyer Valeros, 20, is charged with manslaughter and assault. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment at Honolulu Circuit Court Thursday.

After securing an Oahu grand jury indictment two weeks ago, prosecutors revealed that the defendant allegedly drank at least six beers and 10 shots of liquor before getting behind the wheel of a minivan that later crashed on the H1 in Aiea.

Six passengers were in the vehicle. Ervin Yanuaria, 20, was killed.

Valeros is free after posting $50,000 bail. His trial is tentatively set to begin April 30th.
