Bows End Rocky Road Trip

Posted: Updated:

RUSTON, La. (HawaiiNewsNow) – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team concluded an arduous three-game road trip with an 84-67 loss to Louisiana Tech Saturday afternoon at the Thomas Assembly Center. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 15-12 overall and 6-6 in the Western Athletic Conference.

It was the third straight double-digit loss on the road for the 'Bows, who also lost at Montana and New Mexico State during a 10-day stay on the mainland. The Bulldogs (15-14, 5-7 WAC), meanwhile, won their fourth straight home game, while completing a season sweep of UH. The loss dropped UH into a tie for fourth place in the WAC with Utah State with two league games remaining.

Vander Joaquim posted his 11th double-double of the season to lead UH with 20 points and 10 rebounds.  Zane Johnson added 11 points, while Jeremiah Ostrowski recorded six points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.

Trevor Gaskins led La Tech with 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, while Brandon Gibson chipped in 16.

For the second time in a week the Rainbow Warriors ran into a hot perimeter team as the Bulldogs buried 11-of-24 shots from the beyond the arc. UH also fell victim to the turnover bug, finishing with 20 turnovers, two days after committing a season-high 24 at New Mexico State.

UH got off to a strong start, scoring the game's first seven points and leading by as many as eight points. But the Bulldogs crept back and went on a 16-4 run midway through the half to take its first lead and eventually went into the locker room with a 42-36 advantage.

UH cut the deficit to 45-41 just minutes into the second half, but the Bulldogs exploded for 16 unanswered points in a five-minute span as the 'Bows suddenly found themselves in a 61-41 hole.

Again UH wouldn't fold, going on a 16-4 run to cut the deficit to just eight points with a little more than six minutes left.  But the Bulldogs reeled off 11 straight points to put the game away.

The 'Bows will now finish it regular-season at home with a pair of games, beginning with a match-up against Idaho on Thursday, March. 1. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
