Foundation poured for Vegas SkyVue wheel

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

More than 100 cement trucks are helping fill the foundation for the new SkyVue large-scale observation wheel on the Las Vegas Strip Thursday.

The foundation filling marks the start of construction of what will be the third largest observation wheel in the world and the largest in the Western Hemisphere.

Plans call for SkyVue to tower 500 feet above Las Vegas Boulevard, across from Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort.

The wheel will feature 32, 24-person gondolas and two high-definition light-emitting diode big screen displays at the center of the wheel. Each display will measure 50,000 square feet. The monitors will feature live performances, and listeners can tune in on their iphones even from miles away.

The project has brought 700 construction jobs to the valley, and will have another 500 openings for retail and dining once the property opens.

Organizers have scheduled the opening of SkyVue on July 4, 2013.
