HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Snow and ice have closed the road to the summit area of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Meantime, the National Weather Service has continued a Winter Storm Warning for the upper slopes about 8,000 feet and summit areas of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The warning means that significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible, making travel very hazardous or impossible.
According to the Mauna Kea Weather Center Web site, the road to the summit has been closed at the visitor station. Web cams at the summit showed significant snowfall.
