HPD officer arrested after hitting pedestrian

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Honolulu police officer was arrested early Saturday after his car hit a pedestrian.

According to investigators, 57-year-old Andrew Tsukano was driving his personal police vehicle when he struck a 42-year-old man crossing South Beretania Street just before Victoria Street.

It's not clear whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk. Authorities said both men were taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Police said Tsukano refused to submit to a sobriety test. He was booked on suspicion of drunken driving and negligent injury. Tsukano was later released pending further investigation.

HPD has not said whether Tsukano was on duty at the time of the crash. Sources tell Hawaii News Now he is a sergeant with the police department.
