MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The beach at Makena State Park was closed today because of a shark sighting.
Maui County lifeguards say the shark was sighted about 11 a.m. The shark was estimated at 10 to 12 feet long and was seen about 10 to 15 yards from shore by a lifeguard as he was entering the water.
Signs have been posted and DLNR enforcement officers (DOCARE) assisted county lifeguards in notifying beachgoers.
The beach is closed a mile in either direction, from Maluaka beach to the northern boundary of Ahihi-Kina'u Natural Area Reserve.
The beach was reopened at 2:30 p.m. after no other shark sightings were reported.
