HONOLULU (AP) - The state House Tourism Committee is reviewing a
proposal to allow one standalone casino in Waikiki.
House Bill 2788 would also create the Hawaii Gaming Commission and
impose a 15% tax on the casino's gross receipts.
The bill to allow a 20-yar license for a single casino was
introduced by Speaker Emeritus Rep. Joe Souki.
Gaming bills are regularly introduced at the Legislature, but
Hawaii remains 1 of 2 states with no legalized form of gambling.
Tourism Committee Chairman Tom Brower said he would hear the bill
to keep the conversation open.
Gambling is a way to increase tax revenue and lessen future tax
increases on residents, Brower said.
He added that other cities show how residents can benefit from
legalized gambling, if done correctly. Otherwise some might suffer.
