HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu police are investigating the murder-suicide of a retired officer who shot his ill wife and then turned the gun on himself in their Hawaii Kai home.

Police say the 81-year-old husband shot and killed his 79-year-old wife, who was suffering from a long-term illness. Their son had heard three gunshots from their bedroom when he checked on them Sunday.

On Monday, the Honolulu medical examiner's office identified the couple as Leighton and Julia Yasuhara. Autopsies will be conducted.
