SALT LAKE (HawaiiNewsNow) - A motorcycle crash in Salt Lake killed a 47-year-old man around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Emergency crews rushed to the intersection of Bougainville Drive and Lawehana Street near the Target store. According to police, the motorcycle and a Ford Explorer were heading in opposite directions on Bougainville Drive.
"The SUV was headed in the makai direction, towards the ocean, and the motorcycle was heading in the mauka direction, towards the mountain," said Lt. Bobby Towne of HPD's Traffic Division.
A woman and her two young sons, all military dependents, were in the SUV when the collision occurred.
"Apparently, the motorcycle, which may have been traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control, slid across the lane, and into the path of an oncoming vehicle," explained Towne.
The motorcyclist died at the scene. The woman and her sons were not hurt, but she was visibly shaken by the crash. Officers blocked off the area for a few hours while they investigated. It's unknown if alcohol or drugs are involved.
"That part is way too early at this point. The rider of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet, and like I said, we are looking at speed at this point," said Towne.
