State of the State, Missing Sailboarder?, Pro Bowl & Las Vegas Giveaway

STATE OF THE STATE

Governor Neil Abercrombie will deliver his State of the State address this morning at 10. Ramsay Wharton will have a preview this morning on Sunrise. We'll broadcast the Governor's remarks live on KGMB, KHNL, and K5 and stream it live on HawaiiNewsNow.com. Stay with us for a breakdown of the issues covered. Our political analyst Dan Boylan will take notes and join us with his take on the Governor's address.

NO DEAL- TEACHERS' STRIKE POSSIBLE

One of the focuses of the Governor's State of the State is likely education. Last week, members of the teachers union rejected a proposed six year contract. One of the options still on the table is a strike.

MOURNING HPD OFFICER

The community is mourning the death of a police officer who was hit by a car on the H1 Freeway. 28 year old officer Garret Davis was killed in a fiery crash Saturday while helping a couple who had a flat tire on the freeway. We have this story on our website.

WEATHER NOW

The trades were nice while they lasted, but the winds are shifting and that could pull vog in our direction. That's the bad news, but Dan Cooke says there's some good news for surfers. A series of west northwest swells are expected this week which will keep surf heights at about head high to a little overhead.  Download our Hawaii News Now mobile app to stay connected.

TRAFFIC ALERT

Overnight, the westbound lanes of the H-1 were closed between the Vineyard Boulevard off ramp to the Palama street off ramp. These lanes will be closed every night this week starting at 10:30 for replacement of the electronic message board on the Liliha Street overpass.

MISSING SAILBOARDER?

Just days after a blue kayak spotted off Kualoa beach park sparked a search for a missing person, a wayward sail from a windsurfing board floating in the Diamond head/Kahala area has led to another search. In the case of the kayak, a diver saw our story on sunrise and let authorities know he was okay. We'll keep tabs on this latest search on Sunrise.

GABRIELLE GIFFORDS TO STEP DOWN

This week, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords plans to resign from congress. Her recovery from an assassination attempt last January has been remarkable, but Giffords says she needs to focus on her health. She lost 50 percent of her vision and struggles to speak and walk.

SUPER BOWL SET/PRO BOWL TICKETS

It will be a rematch of the New England Patriots and New York Giants in the Super Bowl. Guess that answers my question if Tom Brady will come to Honolulu for the Pro Bowl! We'll award tickets to the Pro Bowl all week long on Sunrise. Go to our facebook page for your chance to win.

LAS VEGAS GIVEAWAY

And, we're in a giving mood this morning. We'll announce the winner of our Las Vegas facebook giveaway during Sunrise.

Hope you can join us!

Aloha,

Tannya Joaquin
