Man found dead in stolen vehicle on Kauai

PRINCEVILLE (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kauai police discovered a dead body in a stolen vehicle Thursday afternoon.

Police say at about 2 a.m. yesterday an 82-year-old man reported that a male subject broke into his Hanalei home. The elderly man alleged that the suspect held him at gunpoint and took off with an undisclosed amount of cash and his Suzuki SUV.

The victim did not report any injuries.

Police later located the stolen SUV in Princeville and discovered the body of who they believe to be the suspect in the vehicle.

"This case is currently under investigation, and as such we are unable to release additional details at this time," says Kaua'i Police Chief Darryl Perry. "However, at this point, there is no reason to believe, nor is there any evidence to support, the possibility of a homicide; I want to reassure the residents of Princeville and the general public that you and your 'ohana are safe."

The man's identity is being withheld pending a positive identification and notification of next of kin.

An autopsy has been scheduled.
