AFGHANISTAN (HawaiiNewsNow) - Six U.S. Marines have been killed in a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan, according to NATO military command in Kabul.

U.S. officials say the helicopter, a CH-53D Sea Stallion, crashed in Helmand province.

Our media partner the Honolulu Star-Advertiser is reporting that the Marine Corps' Sea Stallion helicopters are based out of Kaneohe Bay.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe has not yet commented on the crash. "We are still in the process of gathering more information on the incident," a NATO official told Reuters news agency. He declined to give any details of the crash until the families of those on board had been informed.

U.S. officials say the incident was not believed to be the result of enemy fire.

In March of 2011 a CH-53 Stallion Helicopter crashed on the Kaneohe Bay sand bar, killing a U.S. Marine.
