KIHEI, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) – A private vessel previously owned by the United States Navy is still aground near Sugar Beach off the cost of Maui after attempts to remove it during high tide failed late Tuesday night.
A representative from Maui Fresh Fish, LLC, the company that owns the boat, met with a U.S. Coast Guard-Marine Safety Officer on Wednesday to determine if the grounded vessel was leaking oil or fuel. Neither substance was found in the vicinity.
Authorities say the boat broke loose from its mooring near the beach before coming aground Tuesday morning. Attempts by company officials to move the vessel late Tuesday night were unsuccessful after strong winds and ocean currents kept it ashore.
Officials will wait until the next high tide, at around 2 a.m. Thursday, before again attempting to remove the vessel.
Members of the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation on Maui are assisting the owners in the removal effort.
