More Heavy Rain? Low Key Opening for Legislature, Wikipedia Goes Dark

SEVERE WEATHER: HEAVY RAIN & VOG IN THE FORECAST

We could see another day of severe weather. The heavy rain and thunderstorms that slammed Kauai yesterday could be back for round 2 today and this time, Oahu could also get soaked. This is a look at video from Kauai's downpour.

ALL BUSINESS FOR OPENING DAY OF LEGISLATURE

The Hawaii Legislature reconvenes at 10 this morning and we won't see the normal fanfare. Instead of entertainment, food and lei, lawmakers will get right to work, discussing economic recovery, healthcare funding, and budget concerns. You'll find more on their first day back at work at this link.

Ramsay Wharton will have live interviews on Sunrise with leaders from both parties in the House and Senate to hear what's on their list of priorities for the 2012 session. She'll also show us how social media is changing the way they do business.

DEFICIT BALLOONS

The Legislature starts the session with a budget surplus and some bad news. A revised Council on Revenues forecast predicts escalating deficits beginning at $19.3 million in fiscal year 2013 and peaking at $312.4 million in fiscal year 2016.

MAYOR CARLISLE IN WASHINGTON D.C.

Honolulu's Mayor is in our nation's capitol for the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Mayor Carlisle will meet with the Federal Transit Administrator about the rail project. This comes as noted rail opponent, former Governor Ben Cayetano prepares go announce his candidacy for Honolulu Mayor later this week.

CRUISE SHIP SEARCH SUSPENDED

Italian rescue workers have suspended search operations on the grounded cruise ship. Rough seas caused the vessel to shift slightly on the rocks, leading to concerns for the safety of divers and firefighters searching for 22 missing people. The death toll in the disaster rose to 11 yesterday after the bodies of five adult passengers, all wearing life jackets, were discovered.

OCCUPY PROTESTERS TRIGGER LOCKDOWN AT WHITE HOUSE

Overnight, a brief lockdown was ordered when an Occupy protester threw an apparent smoke bomb over the fence at the White House. The President and First Lady were not home at the time. They were out at a restaurant celebrating Michelle Obama's 48th birthday.

WIKIPEDIA GOES DARK

Anyone turning to Wikipedia for answers today, instead will find a message. It reads: "Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge" and explains that the online encyclopedia has shut down for the day to protest anti-piracy legislation being considered in Congress. Wikipedia says the bill "could fatally damage the free and open Internet."
