HFD: Makaha vehicle fire intentionally set

MAKAHA (HawaiiNewsNow) - An arson investigation is underway following an early morning vehicle fire in Makaha.

Firefighters responded to the home located on Lahaina Street at 3:14 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials say the fire started inside of a 2010 Chevy Camaro and extended to the carport.

The owner of the vehicle, a 26-year-old Schofield soldier, managed to escape the home with his pet dog unharmed.

The soldier told Hawaii News Now that he ran out of his house when he heard pops and banging sounds.

HFD crews extinguished the fire at about 3:30 a.m.

Total damages are estimated at $40,000.

The case has been turned over to the Honolulu Police Department.
