Waikiki sand replenishment project begins Monday

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Expect parts of Waikiki Beach to be closed on Monday as crews start prepping to extend the shoreline.

According to officials, the work is part of the state's $2.3 million sand replenishment project, which stretches from Kuhio Beach to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

On Wednesday, the state held a blessing for the three-month project.

A barge will collect 24,000 cubic yards of sand from off shore and pump it through a pipe to a basin located on the beach.

The pump work will not start until the end of the month.
