KANEOHE (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new threat has been reported in coral colonies in Kaneohe Bay.
Scientists believe they've found an outbreak of coral disease hitting the area.
The disease, known as Montipora white syndrome, was first seen nearly two years ago.
It is believed to be caused by an infectious bacteria that targets rice coral.
A marine biology team says nearly 200 colonies of coral in the bay appear to be affected.
A scientific rapid response team is documenting the outbreak.
Residents trained in identifying reef threats are being asked to report any signs of the disease.
