CHINATOWN (HawaiiNewsNow) - Chinatown is getting ready to celebrate the Lunar New Year of the Dragon.
Mayor Peter Carlisle helped kick off the "Month in Chinatown" festival on Thursday.
Several events will be held leading up to the Chinese New Year on Monday, Jan. 23.
This year is particularly special for the mayor.
"This is the year of the water dragon," Carlisle said. "And the last time they had a water dragon was 1952, which happens to be the birthday of your beloved mayor of the City and County of Honolulu."
The Chinese New Year Festival will take place Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Chinese Cultural Plaza.
The event will feature exhibits and entertainment, as well as martial arts demonstrations.
