HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Some residents and businesses across Oahu were without power Thursday morning.
According to Hawaiian Electric Company, about 45,000 customers in Waipahu, portions of town, Leeward and Windward Oahu, Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai lost power when the largest generating unit tripped offline.
HECO says power was briefly turned off to some customers as part of a protective measure to restore the balance of power supply and demand on the Oahu grid, as well as prevent a more widespread or longer outage.
"We sincerely apologize for the disruption to our customers," HECO vice president for corporate relations Lynne Unemori said. "Our employees worked to safely restore power as quickly as possible and we appreciate our customers' patience and understanding."
Power was restored to customers shortly after 10 a.m.
