KANEOHE (HawaiiNewsNow) - A former Honolulu police officer charged with theft gave up his court fight Wednesday. John Rapozo appeared at Kaneohe District Court to plead no contest to stealing merchandise from a Walmart in 2010.

Rapozo was a 25-year, HPD veteran at the time of his arrest. He has since left the department.

Police say he was detained outside Walmart in Pearl City after he shoplifted a $60 computer game and a $12 hat.

"This was clearly a mistake in judgment on the part of Mr. Rapozo," Michael Healy, defense attorney, said. "This type of thing would not happen again."

The judge granted Rapozo's request for a deferral, which means he can keep the conviction off his record if he stays out of trouble for the next six months.
