Big Island kicks off Volcano Awareness Month

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Special events will be held throughout the month of January as the Big Island kicks off Volcano Awareness Month.

The U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Hawaii Volcanoes National Parks and the University of Hawaii at Hilo will offer weekly guided tours and other programs to promote awareness.

Also, in celebration of the Observatory's 100th anniversary, an open house will be held on Jan. 21.

The public will get the opportunity to tour the observatory, which is normally closed to the public.
