Local Connection: Norm Chow

By Rick Blangiardi

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Hawaii is very happy to welcome back coach Norm Chow.

You probably saw the joyous news conference last week where his signing was confirmed.

But another moment in the unfolding of this story was, for me, quite telling. This was coach Chow's first season as offensive coordinator for the University of Utah when the news broke about the opening for the head coaching job at UH.

Coach Chow has had a brilliant coaching career. Before Utah, he's been the offensive coordinator at UCLA, for the Tennessee Titans in the NFL, USC, NC state and of course, BYU.

But this will be his first head coaching job long overdue. He is now back home in Hawaii where he grew up and began his coaching career.

He had to come back home to coach UH. It is his destiny. I was struck by the emotion he showed about leaving his team in Utah. I am confident his players and fellow coaches at Utah understood his decision to accept this great challenge. Despite this, however, Coach Chow was overcome with emotion when he spoke about leaving his players and the University of Utah football program.

This tells me something important about this man - about his commitment to the young men he coaches.

His career has never been about 'his career' - it's about developing the young men who entrust their talents to him.

That's exactly what you want in a head coach. In fact, it's what you want in a leader of any kind.
