HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Low supplies of ahi could drive up the price of sashimi and poke for the New Year's holiday.

Guy Tamashiro of Tamashiro's market says the ahi supply during Christmas was quite good and that helped keep prices down.

They sold sashimi grade Ahi for under $10 a pound. But the outlook isn't as good for this upcoming week.

However that could all change with a few good catches.

"After Christmas it's much less. So far for the first 2 days after Christmas it's been very light, few catches and few boats, so we're hoping that it'll all pile up," said Guy Tamashiro.

Tamashiro says prices for premium grade ahi have remained sky high all year due to heavy demand from Japan. For a cheaper alternative, Tamashiro recommends Nairagi (striped Marlin), which can be used for both sashimi and poke.
