HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Criminal proceedings against a man suspected of sexually assaulting a Mililani restaurant owner will be stalled for at least another six months after a mental health expert ruled that he's still unfit for trial.
Joseph Navas is charged with robbery, burglary, kidnapping, and seven counts of sex assault. He's accused of attacking a 47-year-old woman in the storage room of her restaurant in May 2010.
Navas is currently being treated and monitored at the Hawaii State Hospital in Kaneohe. Back in 2008, an unrelated burglary case against him was dismissed when doctors determined that he was mentally ill.
Circuit Judge Richard Perkins set a June 25, 2012 review hearing to check if the defendant's mental state has improved to the point where he can understand the proceedings against him and assist in his defense.
