KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Salvation Army on Kaua'i received a golden surprise just in time for Christmas.

The Hanapepe Corps discovered a United States 50-dollar gold coin in their red kettle.

The rare coin is valued at approximately $1,700, but the Salvation Army says it is grateful for all donations.

"We don't want to just thank that anonymous donor. We want to thank all the anonymous donors who put into our kettle. From the little kid that puts in a penny to the person that drops in a fifty dollar gold coin, thank you all so much for your kokua", said Lt. Sarah Smuda of the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army says this year was extra special for donations and the West Kaua'i region collected more money in its kettles than ever before.
