HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The former Hawaii superferries will soon be in the hands of the Navy.
The U.S. Navy received Congressional approval to buy the Huakai and Alakai from the U.S. Maritime Administration.
The recently passed defense bill allows the Navy to spend up to $35 million to buy the two ships.
The U.S. Maritime Administration took control of the superferry vessels back in 2009 shortly after the venture folded here in Hawaii due to legal challenges.
A transfer date has not yet been set.
