HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The University of Hawaii announced Wednesday that Norm Chow has accepted the head coaching position for the Warrior football team.

According to UH, Chow will be formally announced at a press conference on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The announcement comes two weeks after Greg McMackin announced his retirement as head coach of the Warriors.

The 65 year old will be the first Asian-American head coach of a major football program, and the 22nd head coach for the university.

"I am extremely honored to receive the privilege of leading the University of Hawaii football program; it is very humbling," Chow said. "This is a program with great history, and I feel excited and energized about creating a program that will make all of the people of Hawaii feel pride for the university and our state. I am looking forward to coming home, to family and friends, and I am going to do my best to contribute to the rich history of Hawaii and its progress. I want to thank President Greenwood, the Board of Regents and Athletics Director Jim Donovan for giving me this opportunity, and I am looking forward to meeting the student body at the University of Hawaii and getting them excited about Hawaii Football."

Chow is currently the offensive coordinator at the University of Utah. He'll finish the season with the Utes as they prepare for the Hyundai Sun Bowl against Georgia Tech on Dec. 31.

"I am happy and proud to welcome Norm Chow as our new football coach," Athletics Director Jim Donovan said. "I'd like to thank the search committee for their work the last two weeks. I'd also like to thank Glenn Sugiyama and DHR International for their support. Obviously Norm is one of the best offensive minds in the country and we are thrilled that he's able to come home to lead our football program. This is special not only for the university but for him. His wide-open offense and name recognition will only help us in recruiting the top talent to our university and football program."

Chow's coaching resume spans 39 years at both the collegiate level and National Football League. The Punahou alumnus was the offensive coordinator for Brigham Young University, North Carolina State, USC, UCLA and the Tennessee Titans.

"I think it's great for the university. Coach Chow has been a heralded coach for a great while," Seattle Seahawks head coach and former USC head coach Pete Carroll said. "I'm sure it's exciting for Norm to go back. He knows his way around and will be very familiar with what the university stands for, what they're looking for, and I think the players that go there will get a great benefit of his coaching."

Chow will formally be introduced as the new UH Head Football Coach at 3 this afternoon. We'll have live coverage streaming from the Stan Sheriff Center on KGMB, KHNL, KFVE and HawaiiNewsNow.com.
