HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Fire Department says the deadline to purchase firecracker permits is Wednesday, Dec. 21.
According to HFD Capt. Terry Seelig, the public generally waits until firecrackers go on sale before purchasing their firecracker permits.
Firecrackers are expected to go on sale Dec. 26, which is five days before they can be set off.
Officials say 2,885 firecracker permits have been sold as of Dec. 19, compared to 1,006 on the same day last year.
Seelig says even though firecracker permit sales in 2011 are higher than previous years, they will not be available for purchase after Wednesday.
Firecracker permits are available at Satellite City Halls during normal business hours for a $25 fee. Permits are not available at Oahu fire stations.
HFD encourages the public to pay attention to the new deadline for purchasing permits. Those without permits will not be able to buy firecrackers after Christmas.
According to HFD, 10,008 permits were sold in 2010.
