WAIPAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 67-year-old man died after he was hit by a pickup truck as he was crossing a street in Waipahu, police said.

According to investigators, the man was in a crosswalk when he was hit by the truck at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Hiapo and Kuhaulua Streets.

Skip Easton, who lives at the corner where the accident happened, said he wasn't able to sleep and was outside, with his back to the street. "I suddenly heard a heavy thud. No screeching tires or anything. I saw the truck coming and he was not going that fast. He didn't swerve or anything. He never, I don't think, saw him," said Easton.

Easton also said the driver of the pickup truck stopped and tried to assist the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.

Police closed the Hiapo Street Bridge for about an hour-and-a-half while they investigated.
