HONOLULU, Oahu (HawaiiNewsNow) - When I clap, you will dance! Is that what comes to mind when you think of hypnosis? Well think again, it's also used in the medical field and it's incredibly relaxing. Celebrities like Matt Damon, Ellen Degeneres and Drew Barrymore used hypnosis to stop smoking. A published report in the Journal of Applied Psychology found it 3 times as effective as the patch and 15 times more effective than willpower alone.
Mindy Ash has been a clinical hypnotherapist in Honolulu since 2006. She says, "There have been studies that have been conducted and hypnosis is very successful for irritable bowel syndrome. I've had people that have had fears and phobias, fears of elevators of flying insects and public speaking, success in one session."
The Mayo Clinic uses hypnosis to alleviate nausea in chemotherapy patients, reduce labor pain and help with weight-loss, allergies and even asthma. Mindy uses the power of positive suggestion to change peoples lives.
"The conscious mind it deciphers information and makes decisions that might be based off of previous learning, where the subconscious mind gets new information and can utilize that to a more beneficial result," she explains.
Hypnosis is when the brain goes into the alpha and theta brain wave states, bypassing the critical faculty of the conscious mind.
She explains further, "We have this critical faculty, kind of judging information and determining has this situation happened before, how do I respond to it and so forth. When we take it down to a subconscious level that's where our habits are, the habit of smoking, the habit of riding a bike, driving a car. We communicate directly with the subconscious mind and we give the subconscious mind suggestions for what the client is wanting to achieve."
I was surprised to find a study conducted by a clinical psychologist showing hypnotherapy is more effective than traditional behavioral therapy. After 6 sessions, clients had a 93 percent success rate.
Kathy Custer came to Mindy for help with completing a 150 page circular document, procrastination had set in. "I have to be honest after our session I left her office and I didn't feel any different, I didn't look any different but the next morning when I woke up that's when I felt the difference. I really did sit in a little wooden chair and type for ten hours that day and I just could not believe it," she said.
It worked so well for her she's come back for help with public speaking, self doubt and even referred her friends. "I do have one friend who was having social anxiety. He's had great success with that, everyone has noticed the difference," she said.
It is expensive, a face-to-face session will cost between 100 and 200 dollars per hour. However audio tapes are sometimes just as effective and you can find those online. Hypnosis is different for everyone but there's a good chance it could work for you.
