Mokulele Expanding?, Traffic Alert, Strong Winds

To Illinois and beyond. Mokulele Airlines wants to launch service betweeen Honolulu and Rockford, Illinois in March and start flying from Rockford to London by May. The only thing standing in the carrier's way? Approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. Howard Dicus will have all the details this morning on Sunrise.

We're also following another big business story today: the blessing and grand opening for a large new Safeway on Beretania Street. We'll give you a first look inside the 65-thousand square foot store.

A Kaneohe Marine who received the Medal of Honor for heroics in a 2009 Afghanistan battle thanks supporters who say he deserves the honor. A published article raised questions about the military report that credits Dakota Meyer with making 5 trips into a kill zone to save 13 marines and soldiers, 23 afghan soldiers while killing 8 insurgents. Hear what the Marine says about it.

Traffic alert: The two makai west-bound lanes of Ala Wai Boulevard are closed near Nahua Street due to a water main break. Watch Sunrise as we track your hot spots.

Weather watch: Dan warns of strong winds and big waves. A high surf advisory is up for north and west facing shores of Oahu, Kauai and Niihau and for the north facing shores of Maui and Molokai. A small craft advisory is also posted through tomorrow night.

New this morning: Japan's Prime Minister says that the tsunami-devastated nuclear power plant has reached a "cold shutdown" and is no longer leaking substantial amounts of radiation. The announcement comes a full nine months after the March disaster.

Also this morning on Sunrise, age appropriate toys plus the hottest gadgets for the holidays and a preview of the Nutcracker and Dance Central's Winter show. And, the waiting game continues for our new Sunrise member. Will this be the day Steve becomes a dad?

Hope you can join us on an Aloha Friday!
