EASTERN PAPUA NEW GUINEA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A strong earthquake shook Papua New Guinea, but was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The quake was measured at a magnitude 7.1, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake happened at 7:04 a.m. HST, about 137 miles north-northwest of Port Moresby.
