HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Authorities shut down Kawaiahao Street near Ward Avenue Sunday after a utility pole broke and spilled transformer fluid onto the roadway.

The break was reported at 12:15 p.m. Police shut down Kawaiahao Street between Ward and Cummins Street while crews from Hawaiian Electric Company and the Honolulu Fire Department Hazardous Materials team worked to contain the spill.

The power pole broke almost in half, with the top half still dangling from wires and swinging in gusty winds.

HECO said about 100 customers were without power. However, the Ward shopping center, including Ward Warehouse, has electricity.

The cause of the break wasn't known, but it was believed to be wind-related.
