Basketball coach uses Angel Tree to teach kids about giving

KAHALA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Members of the Kalanianaole Athletic Club winter basketball team visited the Angel Tree at Kahala Mall Friday to pull tags from the tree and buy a present for other kids in need.

It was the idea of head coach Jude Lampitelli, who would normally receive a gift from the team.

"Instead of chipping in and buying me and the assistant coach a gift, why don't we pull Angel Tree tags, give one to every family, and have them go and buy whatever gifts those people need," Lampitelli said. "And I suggested it to the parents and the parents embraced it, thought it was a great idea."

Lampitelli also said it was a good way to teach the elementary school-aged kids that there are others who need help at the holidays.

"It's good to let them learn the lesson about expanding their horizons a little and say hey, you know, there are kids less fortunate than you guys, who might not even have the opportunity to learn the game of basketball, whose families might not be able to even afford signing them up for a league like this, or might not be able to even buy them something as simple as their own basketball for Christmas," Lampitelli said.

There are still opportunities to help out, as there are still several tag requests from kids and seniors at the Angel Tree at Kahala Mall.
