Cause of deadly Kaneohe Bay helicopter crash revealed

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new investigation reveals that a deadly marine helicopter crash was caused by catastrophic mechanical failure.

A report obtained by our media partners at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser says that the aging CH-53 Stallion Helicopter made a hard impact landing on the Kaneohe Bay sand bar.

Cpl. Jonathan Faircloth, 22, was killed in the Mar. 29 crash. Three other crew members were injured.

The team was taking part in a training flight when they crashed from an altitude of about 300 feet.

In the report, military officials say the crew's actions during the mechanical failure were exceptional considering what they were facing.
