HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Kahuku football team held on to defeat Punahou 30-24 Friday night to capture the division one state championship.
Running back Wiley Aofaga rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown, while the Red Raiders defense forced 5 turnovers en route to scoring the games first 24 points.
The Buffanblu didn't go away.
After the half, Punahou's offense was revived behind a pair of touchdown connections between quarterback Larry Tuileta and running back Steven Lakalaka.
Lakalaka's second score came from six yards out as Lakalaka appeared to be tackled but made a second effort dive towards the pile on to make the score 30-24.
But Punahou's ensuing onside kick attempt failed to travel the necessary 10 yards.
Kahuku ran out the clock to claim their 6th state title.
