HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu Police released tapes of calls made to 911 on the night of a fatal shooting in Waikiki. In the tapes, screaming can be heard, along with some of the chaos immediately after the shooting, as 23 year-old Kollin Elderts of Kailua lay bleeding on the floor of the Kuhio Avenue McDonalds.
One of the callers, who may have been inside the restaurant at the time of the shooting, gave the 911 dispatcher a description of the shooter:
911 - Where is the person that shot the customer?
Caller - He just ran out.
911 - Okay, what does he look like?
Caller - He's a Caucasian, um, about five-six, he has dirty blond hair.
911 - Okay, do you remember what color shirt he was wearing?
Caller - His shirt is bleeding right now?
911 - The Caucasian guy?
Caller - Yeah, the Caucasian guy. His shirt has blood all over and it's kinda, green. Greenish.
The caller also described Elderts' condition:
911 - The guy that got shot. What is he doing? Is he moving?
Caller - He's not moving at all.
911 - Okay, hold on. We have officers on the way.
Another caller said she saw the shooter leave McDonalds and head toward the Waikiki Trade Center area, which is a block Diamond Head of the restaurant. However, another witness hold Hawaii News Now that suspect Christopher Deedy stayed with Elderts after the shooting, and tried to stop the bleeding by putting pressure on the wound until paramedics arrived.
Deedy, an agent with the U.S. State Department how was here for APEC, pleaded not guilty earlier this week in connection with the shooting. His attorney claims self-defense. Deedy remains free after posting $250,000 bound.
