Schofield soldiers return from Iraq

WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD (HawaiiNewsNow) - About 250 Schofield soldiers from the 25th Infantry Division's Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion returned on Monday night to Wheeler Army Airfield after spending nearly a year in Iraq. There were no casualties during the deployment. As the last U.S. Army division in Iraq, the Tropic Lightning soldiers' mission was to oversee all forces as their were withdrawing and removing equipment.

"I'm happy that everything is turned back to the Iraqi people and we believe that they will make better decisions for their country, and I'm just happy that I'm home," said Staff Sgt. Timoteo Mauga.

"It's been three to four years in a row we never had him home for any holidays, so we're just grateful and thank God that he's here," said his wife, Anna Mauga.

A total of 700 soldiers will be returning in the coming weeks. All of the troops are expected back by Christmas Eve.
