HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Award winning recording artist Raiatea Helm held a captive audience of elementary school students. Helm started the day reading stories to first graders at Salt Lake Elementary School.
The musician then went to Kailua Elementary School where she spoke at an assembly about the importance of music education and Hawaiian culture. Helm also performed on stage with a group of fourth and sixth grade students who have been learning ukulele.
Helm hoped to inspire the kids to learn an instrument especially since so many schools do not have formal music programs. She also wanted to help kids appreciate Hawaiian music and be a positive role model.
