HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Persia was a cradle of civilization. Some of America's finest citizens are of Iranian descent. It's a wonder to them, and to the world, what has happened to Iran.
An Iranian plot to assassinate a Saudi Arabian ambassador appears real. Even traditional critics of America have lined up in condemnation of it.
The state department called in all the ambassadors in Washington for a briefing. Whatever it was they were shown, seems to have removed all doubt of the plot. Americans have focused on the plan to enlist a Mexican drug gang to do the job. And we're concerned that the hit was to have happened on u-s soil.
But for the world the important thing is this. Diplomats are supposed to be protected from disputes between nations. They're vital in keeping the peace - vital, even, during war. The world's nations have agreed to this for centuries. Persia played a lead role in creating this civilized culture.
But lately, Iran has done what it likes. Its students seized the US embassy in Tehran in 1979.
The Iranian government let them stay there for more than a year. Today's Iranian government nurtures terrorism. It makes mischief on its closest neighbors.
No wonder some of its closest neighbors have had it.
