HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The first lady tells Hawaii veterans she's got their back as they transition from life in the warzone to life in the workforce.
Michelle Obama is on her way back to Washington D.C. tonight but before saying leaving she pumped up the crowd at a veteran's job fair at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam.
"Aloha!" said the First Lady Michelle Obama as she started her speech.
Obama had the attention of hundreds as she addressed veterans and their families, some of whom were looking for work at the "Hiring our Heroes" job fair. It was an event that connected military personnel with 53 employers from banks, hotels, retailers and more.
"As my husband said, no one who has fought for our country abroad should have to fight for a job when they return home," said Obama during the speech.
She acknowledges it can be tough to transition to civilian life. She says American companies have pledged to hire 125,000 more veterans and their spouses by 2014. She says it's not charity, it's helping skilled people put their talents to work.
"So if there is one thing that I want you all to know today and I want every veteran and every spouse and family to know is that America does have your back. America has your back," said Obama.
Scott Buss can use the support.
"I got discharged from the Army back in May. Trying to find full time work is hard here on the island," said Scott Buss, Army Veteran.
Buss was in the military 11 and a half years and is now working at Domino's Pizza while he searches for a full-time job.
"Some people ask if you have experience, well if you're in the military you can't get that experience in like sales or something like that. That makes it real hard," said Buss.
"You all have mastered state of the art technology, run some of the world's most complex operations, overseen hundreds of colleagues and undertaken missions with no margin for error. Situations where literally the bottom line is life and death," said Obama.
Skills companies can use which is why some people were offered jobs on the spot.
