WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Department of Emergency Management (DEM) sent out a traffic advisory Saturday morning urging residents to continue using Kapahulu Avenue into Waikiki. The traffic around Ala Moana continued to move at a crawl Saturday night.
The checkpoint started about 5 a.m. Friday and is located in-front of the Hawaii Prince.
DEM says that Ala Moana Boulevard is for those entering Waikiki and destined for areas within the security perimeter. Kapahulu Ave. remains the best entry point into Waikiki.
Expect delays of an hour or more if you try to enter Waikiki through Ala Moana and Atkinson,
Kapahulu avenue will also be congested because of the increase in vehicular traffic.
"Checkpoint Waikiki" closes at 11:59 Saturday night.
