Inouye pushes for funds to clean up tsunami debris

HONOLULU (AP) - Sen. Daniel Inouye is pushing to have Congress appropriate funds to clean up marine debris created by the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Inouye's office said Tuesday the Democrat from Hawaii has inserted language into the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Bill allocating an additional $1 million for marine debris cleanup.

The bill originally included $4 million to clean up trash in the ocean, but it now includes $5 million.

The legislation says extra funding is provided to "track and mitigate the immense debris field generated" by the disaster. University of Hawaii researchers estimate the trash could arrive on Hawaii's shores by early 2013 and then reach the coasts of Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Canada around 2014.
