Morning Checkup: Performance Drinks

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - When you exercise, do you reach for a specialty drink to give you an advantage? There are a lot of products to choose from, but which ones are really helping you? Dr. Elizabeth Ignacio breaks down three examples:

Bad: Rockstar Energy Drink. It is not necessary to drink caffeine before a workout, especially for children. As an adult, Dr. Ignacio says if you want caffeine, a cup of coffee or tea 30 to 45 minutes before exercising will suffice.

Better: Muscle Milk. Dr. Ignacio says Muscle Milk is good, but very expensive. If your budget can't accommodate it, Dr. Ignacio recommends a more affordable alternative...

Best: Fat-free chocolate milk. Many studies have now shown that chocolate milk is best drink to drink post-workout. It repletes stores of glycogen, helps muscle synthesis and contains calcium to build stronger bones. Choose fat-free chocolate milk, which has the best fat-to-protein ratio.

Avoid: Processed powders or supplements. Dr. Ignacio says it's always better to eat or drink food in their whole, natural state.
