HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It was a celebration today at the Honolulu Community College with the opening of the Garden of Niuhelewai.

Today was an exciting day for the students and faculty of the Hawaiian Studies Program at HCC. Many people gathered at the Niuhelwai garden to celebrate the opening with hawaiian food and entertainment.

The students and faculty of the HCC Hawaiian Studies Program learned how to set rock, prepare land, and plant and care for 20 different types of taro. In beginning this project, the project was made possible by a $25,000 Kauhale grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The project was coordinated by HCC Instructor Mark Alapaki Luke and they've been working on this project since March 2011.

The future goal for this project is for the students to keep up with the tradition of planting and cultivating taro along with being able to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
