Maui woman killed in overnight crash

MAKAWAO, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui police have identified the driver of an SUV that was killed in a crash early Saturday morning as 31-year-old Tawny M. Yarborough of Haiku.

Police say Yarborough was driving east on Olinda road when she lost control of her Toyota Highlander on a curve, hit a stop sign then and collided with a light pole. The SUV overturned on the roadway.

Police say Yarborough was ejected from the vehicle and died from her injuries.

The crash happened at 1:23 a.m. Saturday on Olinda Road about 0.7 miles east of Pookela Road in Makawao.

Police say Yarborough was not wearing a seat belt.

Police say the front seat passenger a 33 year-old woman from Kula was wearing a seat belt, she was taken to Maui Memorial Medical for treatment and released.

This is Maui County's 16th traffic related fatality for 2011 compared to 10 at the same time last year.
