Big changes for popular island eatery

AIEA (HawaiiNewsNow) - For many Aiea residents, it's the place to get your fix of "Gau Gee".

But now after nearly 50 years in business, Waimalu Chop Suey is changing owners.

In 1962 Mun Cho Yim arrived in Hawaii with just 5 dollars in his pocket and plenty of ambition for the American dream.

The restaurant quickly became a thriving tenant in the Waimalu Shopping Center.

Customers say the "Gau Gee" is terrific.

The Yim family says the decision to give up the place came after their father passed away and the mother was reaching retirement.

The Yim family sold the rights to the restaurant but the new owners did not buy the recipes. They take over starting Saturday.
