KAHULUI (HawaiiNewsNow)- A 32-year-old man is dead following a motorcycle crash on Mokulele Highway late Monday night.
According to Maui officials, the crash happened near Cane Haul Road at 10:55 p.m. when a motorcycle was traveling north in the outer lane. The motorcycle then collided with an industrial truck traveling east.
Following the impact of the crash, the motorcycle caught on fire.
Officials say the operator of the motorcycle died as a result of the crash. His identification is pending notification of kin.
The operator of the industrial truck was not injured.
According to police, the man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Traffic was rerouted to North Kihei Road to Honoapiilani Highway. The roadway reopened just before 2 a.m. Tuesday.
This is Maui County's 15th traffic-related fatality this year, compared to 10 at the same time last year.
This is the sixth fatal crash this year involving a motorcycle.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
