HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Growing roadside memorial for HPD Officer Eric Fontes, who was hit by a truck during a routine traffic stop has prompted the Honolulu Police Department to release this statement.

The Honolulu Police Department expresses its deepest appreciation to the community for the many kind expressions of support for the family of Officer Eric Fontes, who was killed in an overnight traffic collision, and Officer Herman "Sam" Scanlan, who was injured and remains hospitalized.

For safety reasons, we are asking individuals to not leave memorial items at the scene of the collision. Instead, an area at the Kapolei Police Station has been designated for this purpose.  The Kapolei Police Station is located at 1100 Kamokila Boulevard and is open 24 hours every day.

45-year-old Eric Fontes was killed and 55-year-old officer Herman Scanlon was seriously injured when a pickup truck crashed into them Tuesday night.

Honolulu police have moved the existing roadside memorial to the Kapolei Police Station.
