HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An Oahu judge on Tuesday ordered a new mental evaluation for the man charged in the apparent unprovoked slaying of a Waianae High School teacher two years ago.

Tittleman Fauatea is accused of repeatedly stabbing Asa Yamashita, 43, while she was sitting on a bench eating at the Ewa Town Center in February 2009. Criminal proceedings were put on hold after an earlier exam found that the defendant was mentally unfit and, therefore, unable to assist in his defense.

Fauatea is housed at the Hawaii State Hospital, the state's mental health facility in Kaneohe. According to city prosecutors, doctors there have reported improvement in the defendant's mental status.

This is the fourth time a panel of three mental health experts will be formed to examine Fauatea and determine whether he is ready to stand trial. A hearing on the panel's findings is scheduled for December 8th.
